Amendment to the informal caregiver status

Amendment to the informal caregiver status

Labor Law | 27 February 2024

Law No. 20/2024, of 8 February, which amends the regime of the Informal Caregiver Status, will come into effect on 1 March.

This law introduces the first amendment to the Informal Caregiver Status, now recognising as a non-primary informal caregiver the spouse or de facto partner, a relative or in-law up to the 4th degree in the direct or collateral line of the cared-for person, or someone who, despite not having family ties, lives in the same household as the cared-for person, providing regular but non-permanent care, whether or not they receive remuneration for professional activity or for the care provided.

Additionally, parents with shared custody of the cared-for person may both be recognised as non-primary informal caregivers.
